Installing FlowPOS on a computer
FlowPOS runs on Windows and macOS. You download it from the FlowPOS website and double-click it — there is nothing to find in the Microsoft Store or the Mac App Store, on purpose.
Before you start
You need:
- Windows 10 or later, or macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later.
- Permission to install software on the computer. On Windows, FlowPOS installs for the account you are signed in as, so you do not need an administrator.
Windows
- Download FlowPOS-Setup.exe from the FlowPOS website.
- Double-click it and follow the installer.
- Open FlowPOS from the Start menu.
The installer includes everything FlowPOS needs. You do not have to install anything else first.
macOS
- Download FlowPOS.dmg from the FlowPOS website.
- Open it and drag FlowPOS into your Applications folder.
- Open FlowPOS from Applications.
You should not see a security warning
FlowPOS is signed, and on macOS it is notarised by Apple. On a computer with its normal security settings, installing and opening it produces no warning and asks you to override nothing.
Stop. Do not click through it.
A security warning means the file you have is not the one we published — it may have been altered, or downloaded from somewhere that is not us. Delete it, download it again from the FlowPOS website, and if it happens a second time, contact support before continuing.
We will never ask you to bypass a security warning to install FlowPOS.
Two things worth doing on the computer itself
FlowPOS keeps you signed in on this machine so the till is ready when you open it. On a computer, what protects that signed-in session is the computer: the password on the user account, and disk encryption.
- Set a password on the computer's user account. A shared till with no password means anyone who sits down at it is already signed in to your business.
- Turn on full-disk encryption — BitLocker on Windows, FileVault on macOS. Without it, someone who takes the machine can read its files on another computer without ever signing in.
Neither is required. FlowPOS works either way, and you can set them up later — you will find this reminder again in the FlowPOS status window. But these two settings are what stands between a lost computer and your business's data.
One computer, one account
FlowPOS is installed for the Windows or macOS user account you install it under. If two people sign in to the same computer with different accounts and both use FlowPOS, FlowPOS treats them as two separate devices — each with its own printing setup.
That is usually not what a shop wants. If this computer prints for your kitchen or your counter, use one account on it.
Updates
FlowPOS keeps itself up to date. Two things update separately:
- The application updates when you restart FlowPOS. It never interrupts you mid-sale.
- The FlowPOS screens update on their own, without you installing anything.
You can see both version numbers in the status window. Support may ask you for them.
Uninstalling
- Windows: Settings → Apps → FlowPOS → Uninstall.
- macOS: drag FlowPOS from Applications to the Bin.
If this computer was printing for a station, release it in FlowPOS first, or that station will wait a few minutes before another machine picks it up.
